Upcoming events for Pre-Law students

The Road to Law School: An Admissions Director’s Perspective will be held Thursday, October 18 from 5:00-6:00 pm in Lincoln Hall 1064. What is the process of applying to law school? Join us as Sarah Scarpelli, Admissions Director for Northern Illinois University College of Law, shares her extensive admissions wisdom with Illinois students. Ms. Scarpelli will share a detailed plan for the application process as well as giving her inside view of how applications are reviewed and what admissions teams are really looking for in candidates. This is a great event for current applicants as well as sophomores/juniors to attend to get an understanding of how you can plan ahead. It’s also a wonderful opportunity to meet the woman who will be reviewing your application if NIU is one of the schools on your application list! No registration necessary.

The Law School Information Fair is Tuesday, October 23 from 11:00 to 3:00 at the ARC. 124 law schools—our biggest number ever!—will be here to share information about their schools and scholarships, meet interested students, and even give out application fee waivers. All interested students are invited. This is a great opportunity for students of all levels to practice networking skills and begin to develop a connection with the deans of admission who will ultimately read their law school applications. Information about what to wear, a list of participating schools, and other details can be found on our blog here: http://publish.illinois.edu/prelawadvising/2012/10/16/law-fair-special-edition/ No registration necessary—bring your i-card for admission!

What do law school deans really look for in applicants? Get the inside scoop as admissions deans from Saint Louis University School of Law, DePaul University College of Law, and the University of Wisconsin Law School present Inside Law School Admissions on Monday, October 22 from 6:00-7:30 in Lincoln Hall 1027. What are common errors that the deans see in applications? Which personal statements are engaging, and which make the deans lose interest? What specific qualities can a candidate highlight that are helpful in admissions—and which aspects are not as helpful as you’d think? This is a great opportunity to get an inside view of what really goes on during the admissions process. This is a must-see event for any pre-law student! No registration necessary.

NEW: Yale Law School Admissions Webinar on Wednesday, Oct. 24 from 12:00-1:00 pm online. Join us for this free webinar with an admissions professional from the Yale Admissions Office. The webinar is intended to be interactive and allow students to ask questions about what Yale is looking for in applicants, or about the Yale admission process. We suggest that students review the Yale Admissions website and blog before the session at http://www.law.yale.edu/admissions/admissions.htm. Registration is required. We have not yet received the registration link from Yale but will post it on our event calendar here (http://illinois.edu/calendar/list/2508) as soon as we receive it. Note that those who register will have access to a recording of the session afterward.

JUST ADDED: Careers in Intellectual Property Law on Wednesday, November 7 from 5:00-6:00 pm in Room A of the Law Building (504 E Pennsylvania Ave). Intellectual property (IP) law is a fascinating--and expanding--area of law protecting valuable information and ideas, from Coca-Cola's formula to Apple's ipad technology. What exactly is IP law, and how can students prepare for a career in this growing field? Join us as Jolynn Caroline, Director of Career Services at the College of Law, provides an overview of intellectual property law, as well as sharing what kinds of intellectual property legal careers exist--and how to prepare for them! Students in STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics) disciplines are especially welcome to join us, but students of all backgrounds are welcome. (Jobs exist in this field for both STEM and non-STEM majors.) No registration necessary.
